What number is the hadith
Unlike the Al-Quran, where the numbering of verses is somewhat standardized, the numbering of hadiths in a hadith book is very diverse and different.
This is because the compilers of the original hadith books, such as Imam Malik who compiled the book Al-Muwaththa' or Imam Al-Bukhari who compiled Sahih Bukhari, or Imam Muslim and others, did not provide hadith numbers when compiling the book.
Approximately as the Archangel Jibril sent down his revelation to Rasulullah SAW, at that time there was no mention of the verse number at all.
So who gave the numbers to the hadith books if the compilers did not number them?
Usually those who give numbers are researchers (muhaqqiq) who carry out scientific research on the works of previous scholars.
Among the classic muhaqqiq who are famous among hadith scholars, for example, Imam Ibn Ash-Shalah (d. 643 H), Imam An-Nawawi (d. 676 H), Imam Ibn Hajar Al-Asqalani (d. 852 H) and others.
At the present time there are also many researchers (muhaqqiq) who conduct research on hadith books, including those from orientalists who also do so. For example, what was done by Muhammad Fuad Abdul Baqi (d. 1967 AD) who was inspired by Arent J. Wensinck (d. 1939 AD), a Dutch orientalist who compiled the book Al-Mu'jam Al-Mufahras li Al-Alfadz Al-Hadith An -Nabawi and the book Mifathu Kunuz As-Sunnah.
So where did the hadith numbers come from? The answer is from researchers or muhaqqiq, both classical and modern.
