Marcelo M. Rossi (São Paulo, May 20, 1967), known as Father Marcelo R., was recognized by Pope Benedict XVI in 2010 with the Van Thuan Prize as the Evangelizer of the new millennium.
He is also a highly successful singer and writer. Known for his media work in spreading the Catholic faith, Father Marcelo R. helped spread religious music from the Catholic Charismatic Renewal (RCC) movement.
Born into a middle-class Catholic family, he was raised in the São Paulo neighborhood of Santana along with his sisters Monica, Marta, and his father, Antonio Rossi.
His father worked for years as a bank manager, and his mother, Wilma, was a housewife. At the age of 16 he decided not to attend church anymore.
In 1986 he served in the Army in the 1st Company of the 2nd Battalion of Guards in São Paulo. At the age of 22 he graduated in Physical Education from the University of São Paulo (USP).
At the same time, he suffered a double shock: he lost a cousin in a car accident and discovered that his aunt had a malignant tumor in her head.
These two family traumas, which caused him a lot of pain and suffering, led him to reunite with God and return to the Church.
Marcelo began participating in parish activities and, a year later, inspired by a miniseries about the life of Pope John Paul II, he decided to dedicate himself to the priesthood.
He studied two faculties: Philosophy, at the Universidade Nossa Senhora Assunção, and Theology, at the Faculdade Salesiana de Lorena.
On December 1, 1994, he was ordained a priest.
Father Marcelo R. aims to bring the message of Christ and the teachings of the Church to people.
