Slakes Description

This version of the Slakes App has been developed by the Soil Health Institute to provide open access to a reliable method to measure and calculate wet aggregate stability, one of the most common indicators of soil health. Three air-dried soil aggregates are photographed at the beginning and end of a 10-minute submersion in water. The area of soil in both images is estimated automatically using a pixel thresholding algorithm in the phone app. A dimensionless aggregate stability index is calculated as the ratio of initial to final soil area. Values of the index range from ~0.1 to 1, with higher values indicating greater aggregate stability.
