Eine inklusive Sprachlern-App Description
With the EiS app, you can learn signs for AAC independently from and with children, regardless of location.
The EiS app enables children with language development delays and children who are learning German as a second language and their social environment to learn a basic vocabulary of signs from the German Sign Language (DGS) in a playful way.
The shared knowledge of signs supports communication in kindergarten, school and leisure time and enables a more self-determined participation in society.
EiS-App: inclusive • low-barrier • participatory
The EiS app uses four elements to represent terms:
METACOM symbol, word, audio and sign video.
The signs are shown by children with and without disabilities.
The EiS app is intended to offer an inclusive learning situation in which children can learn from and with children and not - as is usually the case in everyday life - impart content to adults.
The service is barrier-free.
The four modules (METACOM symbol, word, audio and sign video) make it easy for every child to find their way around - regardless of whether they can read, write, see, hear or speak.
The design of the EiS app does not require any distracting frills - no fairy dust or unicorn glitter.
We paid attention to clear contrasts so that users with visual impairments can also find their way around easily.
The app has endless patience for repetition: everyone learns at their own pace.
We use the proven METACOM symbols in AAC, courtesy of Annette Kitzinger.
Children can use the symbols in the EiS app to navigate without reading or writing skills being a requirement.
The vocabulary in the EiS app covers the core vocabulary according to Sachse/Boenisch from the Research and Consulting Center for Aided Communication at the University of Cologne. Gradually, the vocabulary is expanded to include the marginal vocabulary.
When executing the signs, we follow Karin Kestner's "Big Dictionary of German Sign Language".
The video recordings are accompanied by a sign language interpreter.
The performers are children with and without disabilities.
They use the signs to support the spoken language.
The phonetic model is authentic: audios are recorded by a child in the recording studio.
The target group is included in the project in a participatory manner, both in the creation of the content and as important testers and feedback providers.
The EiS app is continuously developed and operated sustainably based on this feedback.
